Abstract: Epilepsy is the fourth most common neurological disorder and approximately 33 percent of the epilepsy population has intractable epilepsy. Neurostimulation is one of the four main treatments for epilepsy and is most commonly used in patients with intractable epilepsy. The FDA approved modalities include vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), responsive neurostimulation (RNS) and deep brain stimulation (DBS). The talk will cover a brief history of neurostimulation for epilepsy, clinical use of the devices, and the importance of the engineer in device design and management.
Bio: Dr. Elizabeth Felton is an assistant professor of neurology and biomedical engineering at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She is board certified in neurology and epilepsy. Her epilepsy specific clinical interests include ketogenic therapy for adults, special issues affecting women, neurostimulation and pediatric to adult transitions. She is the UW Health Ketogenic Diet Program director and Women’s Epilepsy Clinic co-director. She established the UW Health Adult Epilepsy Dietary Therapy Clinic and developed a parallel clinical research program.
