UC Irvine to Celebrate National Engineers Week
Weeklong activities begin Feb. 17, 2009 with Dean’s Pancake Breakfast

The weeklong event, which kicks off with the Dean’s Pancake Breakfast on Feb. 17 from 9:00 – 11:30 a.m., provides an avenue for
students to demonstrate inventiveness and imagination through a variety of events. Highlighting the festivities is a series of 14 competitions allowing students to demonstrate innovation and creativity. Examples of contests include:

- Catapult Competition: (Feb. 17, 11 a.m., location: Engineering Gateway Plaza) designers must create a device to toss, propel, kick or fling a beanbag as far as possible.
- Anatomy Airigami Competition (Feb. 17, noon, location: Engineering Gateway Plaza) student teams will have one-hour to construct a “human” body, complete with movable limbs, or a cross section of a eukaryotic cell containing major organelles, using balloons of various shapes, sizes and colors.
- Paper Roller Coaster Competition: (Feb. 17, 1 p.m., location: Engineering Gateway Plaza) participants are challenged to build a free standing roller coaster for a marble, using tag board chutes. Points awarded for a variety of loops and turns.
- Paper Airplane Competition: (Feb. 17, 2 p.m., location: Engineering Gateway Plaza) students design and build a paper airplane that will travel the farthest possible distance.
- RC Car Battle: (Feb. 19, 11 a.m., location: Engineering Gateway Plaza) each driver is given a radio-control car that they must properly prepare for a head-to-head match with another driver.
- Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition: (Feb. 19, noon, location: Engineering Gateway Plaza) student engineers are tasked with designing and building a Popsicle stick bridge that can withstand the highest load.

All events will be held at The Henry Samueli School of Engineering on the UC Irvine campus. For directions, please visit http://www.uci.edu/campusmaps.php
